PNR Status by SMS: How to Check Your Ticket on 139
No mobile data when you need to check your train ticket? You can request PNR status by SMS by sending PNR, a space and your 10-digit reservation number to 139. Use your phone’s regular text messaging app; you do not need to open a railway app or website.
This is a premium SMS service. Check the charge with your mobile operator before sending, even if your plan includes free texts. You still need a working mobile connection.

4 quick steps
How to Check PNR Status by SMS
Keep your issued ticket or booking confirmation nearby. The PNR is the 10-digit reservation reference, not your train number, payment reference or IRCTC transaction ID.
1. Open a new text message
Open the SMS app on your phone and start a new conversation. Enter 139 as the recipient. Use ordinary SMS rather than WhatsApp or another internet messaging service.
2. Enter PNR and your reservation number
Type PNR followed by one space and all 10 digits. Keep the digits together. For example, the layout is PNR 1234567890, with your own number in place of the sample.
You do not need to add passenger names, the journey date or the train number to this enquiry command. This guide recommends the format on South Eastern Railway’s page, reviewed on 26 June 2026; it does not claim that no other format has ever worked.
3. Choose the SIM and send
On a dual-SIM phone, choose the line you intend to use for the enquiry. If your phone displays a premium-message warning, review the charge information before approving the text.
A normal SMS allowance does not establish whether premium short-code messages are included. If you are unsure, ask your operator rather than sending several paid attempts.
4. Read the reply carefully
When a reply arrives, read the current reservation position for every passenger listed. Keep the message time in mind: a reply saved earlier may no longer reflect the latest position.
If your ticket is still waitlisted or in RAC, check again as your journey approaches. Sending an enquiry cannot improve your position or guarantee confirmation.
Charges
Is Checking PNR Status by SMS Free?
Do not assume it is free. South Eastern Railway identifies the service as premium, and IRCTC also lists SMS enquiries among its premium services.
Some guides quote ₹3 per message, while others describe standard SMS rates. The official pages reviewed for this guide do not provide a current, universal rupee tariff. Confirm the price, balance requirements and any roaming restrictions with your operator.
If you prefer to avoid the SMS charge, use the official Indian Railways enquiry page when internet access is available. You can also call 139 and follow its enquiry menu; check call charges separately.
Your reply
What Does the Reply Mean?
Focus on the latest passenger status, not just the position shown when you first booked. Your reply’s layout may differ from the examples below.
| Current entry | Meaning | What you should do |
|---|---|---|
| CNF | Confirmed | Check your assigned coach and berth when available. |
| RAC | Reservation Against Cancellation | A valid RAC reservation permits travel; a full sleeping berth is not assured. |
| WL | Waiting list | Accommodation is not confirmed. Check the latest result and rules for your ticket type. |
| CAN / MOD | Cancelled or modified passenger | Review the full booking before travelling. |
Read each passenger’s current position. For more help with the result and charting information, see our main PNR status guide.
If everyone on an e-ticket remains waitlisted after chart preparation, do not board using that ticket. Check the official boarding rules or ask railway staff if your booking has mixed passenger statuses.
Troubleshooting
PNR SMS Not Working? Check These Things
A missing reply does not mean your reservation is cancelled or confirmed. Work through these checks before trying again.
The message will not send
Check the selected SIM’s mobile service and confirm that the recipient is 139. Your SMS app, phone or carrier may restrict premium short-code messages. Check whether they permit this service; the relevant settings vary by device and network. Ask your operator if you are unsure.
No internet and no mobile signal are different problems. SMS avoids the need for mobile data, but it cannot send while your phone has no usable mobile connection.
The message sends, but no reply arrives
Recheck the format and allow time for a response. This guide does not promise an instant reply or a fixed delivery time. Avoid repeatedly sending the same enquiry, as further attempts may incur charges.
If your departure is close, switch to a 139 voice enquiry or the official website when you can get online. At the station, ask railway enquiry staff for help with an unclear reservation.
The reply says the number is invalid or unavailable
Compare all 10 digits with the issued ticket. If you only have a payment receipt or transaction reference, locate the actual ticket in your booking records or ask the person who booked it.
If the correct number still returns no usable result, contact railway enquiry or the booking provider. Do not assume that paying for a booking attempt means a ticket was successfully issued.
The SMS and an app show different information
Compare when each result was obtained and make a fresh enquiry through the official railway page. Check every passenger separately, especially on family bookings. If the discrepancy remains close to departure, ask railway staff before making a boarding decision.

Other Ways to Check Without Mobile Data
Call 139
Call 139, select your language and follow the current menu for railway or PNR enquiries. Have the reservation number ready. Use the prompts you actually hear because menus can change.
Basic phones
Checking PNR status by SMS works on a basic phone as well as a smartphone. However, SMS and voice calls still need network service. If your phone cannot connect at the station, use the railway enquiry counter.
WhatsApp is a separate service that needs internet access. Sending a WhatsApp message to a number is not the same as sending an SMS to 139. Avoid treating third-party WhatsApp services as official railway channels without checking their identity.
FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the number for PNR status by SMS?
Send the enquiry to 139 using PNR, one space and your 10-digit number. This is the number and format supported by the official railway sources checked for this guide.
Can I Check PNR Status by SMS Without Internet?
You do not need mobile data, a railway app or an IRCTC login to compose the SMS. You need your reservation number, a working mobile connection and access to the charged messaging service.
Can I use 5676747 instead of 139?
Some websites list 5676747 and other older short codes. This guide recommends 139 because the official sources reviewed support it. Current availability and pricing for those alternative numbers were not verified.
Will one enquiry cover a family booking?
Use the PNR for the shared booking, then read each passenger entry returned. Do not assume that one person’s confirmed status means everyone has a confirmed berth. If the response is incomplete, check the official online result.
Does the reply change my ticket or book a seat?
No. The PNR command requests reservation information. It does not book accommodation, improve a waiting-list position or cancel the ticket.
Can I check from outside India?
Do not assume the Indian short code 139 will work from an overseas network or SIM. Ask your operator about short-code access and roaming charges. When you have internet, use the official railway enquiry page instead.
Check the Latest Result Before You Travel
PNR status by SMS is useful when mobile data is unavailable: send the correct command to 139, check the charge and read the response for every passenger. If no reply arrives, use another official enquiry route rather than relying on an old message.
This is an independent information guide, not an Indian Railways or IRCTC service. Official SMS instructions and related reservation guidance were checked on 7 November 2026. No paid SMS was sent as part of this review.
