Status codes explained
PNR Status Meaning: CNF, RAC and WL Explained
Your train ticket says WL in one column and CNF in another. Which one matters? PNR status meaning comes down to the passenger’s latest reservation position: CNF means confirmed, RAC means Reservation Against Cancellation, and WL means waiting list.
Start with Current Status for each passenger, then check charting and accommodation details. A booking can move from waiting to confirmed, while its original booking entry still shows WL.
The basics
What Does PNR Stand For?
PNR stands for Passenger Name Record. It is the 10-digit reference linked to your reserved Indian Railways booking. The number identifies the booking; status codes describe its reservation position.
One family booking can contain passengers with different positions. Read every passenger row instead of assuming that everyone has the same accommodation.

PNR Status Meaning at a Glance
This PNR status meaning table explains the main reservation entries. The practical next step depends on the latest result and your ticket type.
| Code | Meaning | What it tells you |
|---|---|---|
| CNF | Confirmed | The passenger has a confirmed reservation. |
| RAC | Reservation Against Cancellation | Travel is permitted on a valid RAC reservation; a full berth is not assured. |
| WL | Waiting list | The reservation is not confirmed. |
| CAN / MOD | Cancelled or modified passenger | Review the changed passenger entry. |
Two columns
PNR Status Meaning: Booking vs Current Status
Booking Status records the reservation position at booking. Current Status shows the updated position when you make the enquiry. Read the column labels carefully, especially when an app places the two entries close together.
These examples make PNR status meaning easier to apply to your own result:
| Booking Status | Current Status | How to read it |
|---|---|---|
| WL 24 | WL 9 | Still waitlisted, with an updated position. |
| WL 24 | RAC 6 | Now in RAC; a full sleeping berth is not assured. |
| WL 24 | CNF | Now confirmed; the earlier WL entry remains historical. |
These are illustrative examples, not passenger records or a promised progression. A ticket does not have to pass through every example above.

CNF
CNF Without a Coach or Berth Number
CNF means confirmed even when the allocation fields are blank. The official railway legend notes that coach and berth numbers become available after chart preparation.
Check the later allocation rather than choosing a berth yourself. If details remain unclear close to departure, ask railway enquiry staff. A berth preference entered while booking is not the same as a final allocation.
RAC
What Does RAC Mean?
RAC stands for Reservation Against Cancellation. It allows travel on a valid RAC reservation, with reserved sitting accommodation initially. A full sleeping berth is not assured.
Indian Railways describes RAC as splitting berth accommodation into seats. A vacant berth may be allotted according to priority. Do not interpret RAC as either a fully confirmed sleeping berth or an ordinary waitlisted booking.
A number such as RAC 8 identifies an RAC position; it does not mean coach 8 or eight guaranteed cancellations. If the current entry later changes to CNF, read the new coach and berth details when available.
Waiting-list types
What Do GNWL, RLWL, PQWL and TQWL Mean?
The letters identify a waiting-list category. They help explain the reservation pool involved, while the accompanying number identifies a position. These labels are not confirmation percentages.
| Code | Full form |
|---|---|
| GNWL | General Wait List |
| RLWL | Remote Location Wait List |
| PQWL | Pooled Quota Wait List |
| TQWL | Tatkal Quota Waitlist |
| RQWL | Roadside Quota Waitlist |
| DPWL | Duty Pass Waitlist |
For example, GNWL 12 and RLWL 12 are not interchangeable labels. The same number does not establish the same confirmation chances across categories. Avoid treating a small number as a promise that accommodation will become available.
Before you board
Can You Travel if the Current Status Is WL?
WL means the reservation is still waitlisted. Check the latest result before travelling and distinguish these situations:
- Fully waitlisted e-ticket after chart preparation: if every passenger remains waitlisted, IRCTC drops their names from the chart. They must not board using that ticket. Cancellation and electronic refund follow the applicable rules.
- Mixed e-ticket: IRCTC includes partly confirmed or partly RAC bookings in the chart, including their waitlisted passengers. This does not give every passenger a separate confirmed berth.
- Counter ticket: do not assume that an unconfirmed counter ticket permits travel in a reserved coach. Check the applicable travel and cancellation procedure with railway staff.
If a family member on a mixed booking will not travel, check the cancellation or refund procedure promptly. Do not assume that the individual fare will return automatically.

Other Reservation Codes You May See
The official enquiry legend also includes the following entries. Some describe a change or claim rather than a new seat allocation.
| Code | Meaning in the official legend |
|---|---|
| REGRET/WL | Further booking is not permitted. |
| RELEASED | Alternative accommodation was provided; the ticket was not cancelled. |
| R# # | RAC coach and berth identifiers. |
| WEBCAN | A counter-ticket passenger was cancelled online; refund not collected. |
| WEBCANRF | A counter-ticket passenger was cancelled online; refund collected. |
| NT | Passenger did not turn up. |
| TDR | A Ticket Deposit Receipt (TDR) claim has been filed. |
For RELEASED, check the alternative accommodation details before deciding which train or coach to board. For a cancellation or refund entry, use the booking record and official support rather than reading it as travel confirmation.
Prediction label
What Does “Low CNF Chance” Mean?
It is a prediction label, not a confirmed reservation. It suggests that the provider’s model estimates a lower chance of confirmation. Different services may use different methods and thresholds.
Indian Railways describes its own prediction as indicative. A high estimate cannot reserve a berth, and a low estimate does not itself cancel a ticket. Read Current Status separately from any probability shown alongside it.
App messages
What Do “Flushed PNR”, “NR/0” or “0” Mean?
These messages need context. They are not defined as CNF, RAC or WL in the official enquiry legend reviewed for this guide. A lone zero should not be interpreted as a confirmed seat.
If an app displays “flushed”, “not found” or an unfamiliar label, recheck the 10 digits and make an enquiry on the official railway page. A provider’s failure to retrieve a record does not, by itself, explain whether a future journey is cancelled.
For an upcoming trip that still returns no usable result, contact railway enquiry or your booking provider. Keep the complete message for support, but avoid posting an unredacted ticket publicly. This guide does not assign an unsupported universal meaning or a fixed record-expiry period to these labels.
FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
Does PNR status meaning change after chart preparation?
The code definitions stay the same, but a passenger’s displayed reservation position can change. Indian Railways warns that the current position may upgrade or downgrade before final charts are prepared. Read the latest result rather than an old screenshot.
My booking says WL, but Current Status says CNF. Is it confirmed?
Yes. CNF in the current passenger entry means confirmed. WL in Booking Status records the earlier position. Check the allocation when available and make sure you are reading the correct passenger’s row.
Does WL 1 mean my seat is confirmed?
No. WL 1 is still a waiting-list position. A low number does not guarantee confirmation. Follow the latest reservation result and the rules for your ticket type.
Can one passenger be confirmed while another is in RAC?
Yes. Passengers sharing a PNR can have different current positions. One person’s CNF entry does not give the whole group confirmed berths.
Does TDR mean that my refund has been approved?
No. The official legend identifies TDR as a passenger having filed a claim. Filing and approval are different stages. Check the claim’s actual progress through the booking service.
Where should I check an unclear code?
Use the legend on the official Indian Railways enquiry page and read any accompanying remarks. For the checking procedure, see our main PNR guide. If an unresolved result affects an imminent journey, contact railway enquiry on 139.
